How do you determine what amount there is of KE or GPE on a roller coaster? You just have to observe and think a little. Amount of GPE on selected roller coaster. When rollercoaster starts it starts out with some KE but is Increasing its way to GPE. At the starting point, rollercoaster has the least of KE rollercoaster can have. On point 1 rollercoaster has complete GPE because there is a lot of energy stored in rollercoaster. The higher an object is, the more GPE it will have. Point 3 has some GPE because it is working its way up the loop which is gaining GPE ( extra KE due to fall from point 1). The higher or slower an object is the less KE it will have. Point 6 has some KE due to fall from point 4. Point 6 has some GPE but not as much as point 1 because it is going up a small hill. All in all, a rollercoaster has 2 types of energies all throughout the whole ride, each amount of energy is changing due to the rollercoaster's position. Some parts in a rollercoaster can have both energies at the same time.
